Winter

Well, had a wonderful week in Utah with Gin, including a road trip to meet her friend in Colorado, and then I start my journey back and get as far as Chicago.

England is snowed/iced in - no flight until Thursday!

Delivered

Gin has received notification from the US Customs & Immigration Service (USCIS) that the visa petition has been received!

Yay!

And so it begins..

Well, the journey has begun.

Two days ago, my beautiful fiancée Gin started the visa process for me, sending the initial documentation in to the US Customs & Immigration Service. Assuming all is well with it, I could be looking at a May interview!

Bring it on!

Still organising

The going through of boxes is nearly complete - I think that it's only my toolboxes to go now out in the garage.

To sell: the Triumph, the gas cooker, the tumble dryer, the router, the circular saw, various other bits and bobs and eventually the car, TV, blu-ray player, hdd recorder, etc  next year.

Organization

Organizing stuff takes time.

Have started splitting off stuff that would be moving with me to Utah and stuff that will be offered to friends, family, car boot and finally charity.  Down to possibly 4 boxes of stuff to take with me, so it makes more sense to not take my bedroom furniture as I could use FedEx instead of a removals company..

A penny saved is a dollar earned, or something like that!

One bonus, Jessops do US-sized passport photos at 2 for £7, so I can get those sorted easily for visa purposes. Biogrpahic information form completed and colour photocopy of birth certificate made to take with me to Utah in December..

Yep, I'm back off to see Gin in Utah again in mid-December, and so looking forward to it.  The countdown is, naturally, tough again though.  Flying with AA again, out via Dallas, back via Chicago - parents are taking me up, train is bringing me back from London.  Talking of which, I'd better book my train ticket :-)

Confucious say...

that the process for US immigration on a K-1 (or fiancé) visa is somewhat confusing!

To work over there once I've arrived in theory needs the EAD (Employment Authorisation Document - work permit), but it appears that this is so that a US employer can complete the I-9 employment status verification form.  It doesn't mention if I can telecommute back to my overseas employer.

Gin contacted the US immigration people (USCIS) and the agent there said that I could, and people on message boards say that USCIS 'forgives' work for people adjusting their status from the K-1 visa to Legal Permanent Resident.

Confused.com!

Mental note not to look at visa and emigration stuff late at night though - it gets my brain buzzing and then I can't get to sleep for ages!

What a difference a year makes!

It's been a year since I last updated, and my life is changing hugely.

To recap:

I sold the Africa Twin at the start of 2010, and replaced it with a 2003 Triumph Bonneville. 8 months down the line and the Bonnie is up for sale - it just wasn't the right bike for me and isn't being ridden.

I sold the VW Bora to my brother and bought myself a 2007 Ford Fiesta - I didn't need the size of the Bora for my day-to-day requirements, as I'm still working from home and don't drive much.

Most importantly, in October last year I joined eHarmony and have found love at last (altogether now, awwwwwwwwww!). I started speaking to Gin (Gininda) back in October and we got on really well. In fact, well enough for her to fly over from Utah in March for a week, me to fly to Utah in June for a week and then she flew back again in September for a week together in London.

During the week in London, I got down on one achy knee and proposed on the London Eye, and she said yes :-)

Now starts the long US visa journey, but all being well, by next autumn (or fall - I'll have to get used to it lol) I'll be living in Utah with my wife!

It has been one heck of a year, and 2011 is looking to be even better!
